Are you sad because you are isolated or are you isolated because you are sad?

When we are feeling blue it is “natural” to want to be alone. Sadness is a normal human emotion and isolation can follow and can be a healing time to “regroup.” But isolating too long robs us of that cycle of sad back to happy. Medication, alcohol, drugs can be the ‘go to’ solution when our emotions are in that low point. Another ‘go to’ solution is social media.

The Role Smart Phones In Our Sad To Happy Cycle

Smart phones can make us feel less alone because we can connect in those times of isolation. However having a face-to-face conversation with someone is far better than texts and Likes because we can learn a lot about ourselves through expression, voice, and gestures that are missed over the social networks. Social media activity is a form of isolation and in my opinion makes us emotionally flat, inhuman, and robotic. Another factor is that using social media as a cornerstone we set ourselves up for sadness when we “see” that other people are doing presumably better than we. We may start to feel they are happier and go on better vacations, are better looking, have nicer homes, dress better, etc. So while smart phones connect us to people, they are potentially adding to the problem of lowering self-esteem and fueling sadness.

I think people are tricked into thinking they are communicating over the internet and neglect the other forms of relating to others and those skills are lost or never learned if the person is a pre-teen. Is Isolation The New Normal? And if so is sadness the new normal? Once we have created a habit of social media as our social lifestyle we stop using our social skills in public and cut ourselves off from the potential for happiness that is all around us.

Have Smart Phones Destroyed A Generation?

An article in The Atlantic goes in depth about the role social media and smart phones play in the upswing in depression amongst our youth. The author calls that generation iGen, here is an excerpt:

Psychologically, however, they (the iGen teens of today) are more vulnerable than Millennials were: Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011. It’s not an exaggeration to describe iGen as being on the brink of the worst mental-health crisis in decades. Much of this deterioration can be traced to their phones.

Hypnosis Is A Solution for Sadness

Being sad for too long leads to depression. Hypnosis is used to help a person out of that negative cycle and get back to balance. We use hypnosis with our clients to access happy memories or create new ones doing so has an effect of increasing serotonin and dopamine which helps them feel better immediately better and gives us the motivation to lift us out of our low point. It is also effective at boosting self-confidence so hiding behind the screen isn’t necessary.

So if you are feeling down, don’t isolate too long and when ready emerge with the thought that social community is a part of life but that face to face is the contact our emotional and physical body needs.

Here is a Helpful Tip:

Leave phone in car on next trip to store, coffee shop, notice the world around you. Maybe even say hello to a stranger, they may be feeling sad and need your greeting.
