The Flow Center and Holistic Wellness are teaming up to help women relieve their debilitating menopause symptoms.
“Ah, the joy of getting older,” says a woman with salt and pepper hair at the supermarket as she takes pity on you for sticking your head in the ice cream freezer.
You had no other choice. Your sudden hot flash left you dripping with sweat.
You’ve tried every method Google suggested and every old wives’ tale to try to stave off the effects of menopause, but nothing’s worked.
The good news is that there is more than ten years of research supporting hypnosis as a natural and highly effective method for reducing or relieving menopause symptoms.
Because you can’t go on like this.
Carrying around a battery-operated fan you carry around isn’t cutting it. At this point, you need a gale-force wind to cool off. Hence why you’re now resting your head on a tub of Rocky Road.
You’d be embarrassed if you weren’t so exhausted. You had to change your sheets at 2 AM after the mother of all night sweats sent you into a literal meltdown.
But help is on the way!
What is menopause?
Menopause is a natural biological process marking the end of a woman’s reproductive years. Typically occurring in the late 40s or early 50s, menopause is characterized by the loss of menstrual periods and a decline in reproductive hormone levels, particularly estrogen. Officially, a woman is in “menopause” twelve months after her last cycle. The infamous rollercoaster of symptoms in the years prior to that are considered to be “perimenopause.”
Even though menopause is a normal part of aging, women can be deeply affected by its physical effects. Some of the symptoms include —but are certainly not limited to—hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and changes in libido, weight gain, fatigue, dry skin, irritability, joint pain, anxiety, depression, and difficulty concentrating.
Sometimes the emotional effects of menopause are even more daunting. It can represent a significant life transition that can often lead to grappling with issues related to aging. In a society that values youth and beauty, the accompanying effects of menopause such as thinning hair and wrinkles can cause a woman’s self-esteem to plummet. There can be a real sense of loss of being in their “prime,” leading women to believe it’s no longer possible for them to look or even feel beautiful . . . to themselves and others.
Hypnosis Plus Naturopathic Care versus Hormone Replacement Therapy:
The decline in estrogen during menopause may often feel like one’s hormones have gone haywire. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the most commonly prescribed solution. HRT has been a lifesaver for many, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution and isn’t without its drawbacks. HRT poses an increased risk of blood clots (DVT). Additionally, not all women are suitable candidates for HRT due to underlying health conditions.
For women searching for a completely natural and holistic alternative to HRT, hypnosis plus a naturopathic approach fits the bill perfectly. Some may doubt that a natural remedy will be as effective, but research has shown that hypnosis can significantly reduce both the frequency and intensity of hot flashes..
The research around hypnosis suggests that it’s also a game-changer when it comes to managing some major menopause symptoms like poor sleep quality and night sweats.
Can hypnosis help relieve menopause symptoms?
Self-hypnosis is a fantastic method for reducing some major menopause symptoms. There are new findings that suggest it’s second only to HRT as an effective method of reducing the effects of menopause.
As discussed earlier, fluctuating hormones can wreak havoc on a woman’s body. Coupled with uncomfortable night sweats and anxiety about all the life transitions, it’s not shocking that sleep doesn’t come easily—if at all—during this time.
During a random trial of 90 women in 2020, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) Hypnosis Intervention for Sleep in Menopause found that when adhering to a daily practice of self-hypnosis, there was a significant reduction in poor sleep quality and an increase in the minutes of actual time slept.
As the study continued, the results got even better with a reduction in the perception of poor sleep quality in 50%–77% of women. The research has proved so promising that the NCCIH is expanding its work regarding the application of hypnosis in women.
So how does it work exactly?
According to Gary Elkins, Ph.D., professor of psychology and neuroscience and director of the Mind-Body Medicine Research Laboratory at Baylor University, and one of the nation’s leading researchers on hypnotherapy and mind-body approaches says, “Hypnotherapy is a mind-body therapy, similar to mindfulness and guided imagery, that involves the focus of attention, a relaxed state and therapeutic suggestions.”
To put it simply, the subconscious mind can shift one’s perspective for a change in the body.
His studies showcase that hypnotherapy can reduce hot flashes by a staggering 80%, making it more effective than many other management tools, and second only to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). But the real kicker? Sleep quality improves by over 50%, accompanied by a notable drop in anxiety and a significant boost in overall well-being.
He goes further on to say, “Hypnotherapy involves daily practice of 15-minute hypnotic relaxation sessions that teach your brain to adapt to your body’s changing hormone level. Mental images for coolness and control are used to empower women to take control of the two most troublesome menopause symptoms – hot flashes and sleep.”
In an eye-opening 2013 study, Dr. Elkins found that self-hypnosis could be used to reduce hot flashes by 74%. This is a major win for women who don’t want to rely on medication. It also gives them more control over their bodies so they can act immediately when they’re having a flare-up.
Self-Hypnosis: the holistic treatment for menopause relief
Hypnosis is the ultimate tool to hack your brain as well as gain mastery over your body. It can help you shift your perspective on situations or people with whom you may have a negative association.
For many women, that’s menopause.
Our Chief Clinical Hypnotist at The Flow Center, Valerie Grimes, who has gone on a personal journey through menopause agrees, “One thing that we have been taught is that menopause is HORRIBLE, and what we hear over and over and are told by authority figures such as our OB/GYN and also mom and grandma tends to become a TRUTH for us.”
But it doesn’t have to be.
Grimes challenges the prevailing notion that menopause is something to dread. “Hypnosis can change the belief that menopause is a bad thing. I personally went through it under Dr. Naumes’ care for general well-being and only through a conversation about sleep did I realize I was ‘in menopause’. It was actually easy, mainly because I was not expecting it to be bad.”
So if one shifts their perspective from the negative to the positive, then they can successfully “switch off” their menopause symptoms.
The doctor who Grimes is referring to is Dr. Kate Naumes, a naturopath who helms Holistic Wellness via telemed for her clients all over the country and specializes in menstrual and hormone health for women. Dr. Naumes’ unique approach ensures highly tailored and effective healthcare solutions for women, enabling them to live healthy, vibrant lives throughout their hormonal journey.
She’s one of only ten Naturopathic Doctors in the US certified as a NAMS menopause practitioner (NCMP). NAMS is the North American Menopause Society and, interestingly enough, they’ve also given a nod to hypnosis to help women deal with menopause.
How to do self-hypnosis for menopause relief:
- Embrace calming imagery:
In a relaxed state, visualize a cooling sensation, like stepping into a pool or feeling a cool breeze. Concentrate fully on this image and sensation, imagining it coursing through your body. When a hot flash occurs, redirect your focus to this soothing sensation for relief.
- Envision your future self:
Picture how you’d want to feel in six months. Your future self is relaxed, enjoying life, and cool as a cucumber. Now, close your eyes, and immerse yourself in the details of this image – the sights, sounds, and scents. Step into the scene of your future self, focusing on the emotions. Regularly revisit this scene as the more you engage with it, the more real it becomes.
- Turn down the heat:
Picture yourself in a room with a temperature dial ranging from 0 to 10 on one wall. Zero signifies a pleasant coolness, while 10 represents intense heat. Close your eyes. Gradually turn the dial up, sensing your body heat increasing. Hold for a moment, then lower it as close to zero as possible, feeling your body cool down. Repeat this process, gaining control over your body heat, and finally, set the dial at a comfortable level. Practice this technique preemptively, so when a hot flash occurs, you can mentally “control the dial” to lower your perceived body temperature.
How we do it:
The Flow Center’s program has been helping people for decades who want to banish their negative thoughts and habits and transform their lives:
Journey deep into your subconscious:
You’ll be guided into a deeply relaxed state that lets all other thoughts fall away so your mind can focus. This allows your subconscious to be more receptive to suggestion. The hypnotist will begin to unlock issues that have prevented you from experiencing self-acceptance and bring them to the surface.
Create new lovable habits for yourself:
The hypnotist will then reprogram your old internal belief system and rewire it to accept self-love. This new “coding” will allow you to transform the way you see, respond, and attach meaning to your issues. Instead of the negative emotions and patterns you once had, you’ll be able to create new and lovable habits surrounding the way you see yourself.
Develop new positive and loving beliefs:
The voices in your head telling you that you’re not enough will be silenced. No more beating yourself up. Instead, you’ll have effortless kindness and respect for the amazing person you already are. You’ll be able to step confidently into new habits that celebrate all your strengths and see your old habits with more compassion as they depart from your life.
Imagine a future where it is all possible:
You’ll be able to take more chances now that nothing is holding you back. Boldly embrace a new mindset where the opportunities open to you are endless. Nothing is beyond you. In fact, success is at the forefront of your mind.
Additionally, imagine a future where you break the cycle of negative thinking so your children don’t have to go through what you did.
See the benefits of self-love: The result is a gentle and effective ability to return to your natural love for yourself. It’s always been there, but it eroded over time when those negative beliefs crept in. Now that you’ve released those feelings, you have more space to allow your self-esteem to blossom.
