Part 5 in an 8-part series of the Curious Phenomena of Hypnosis.
When we are really certain about something, doubt is absent; conversely when we are doubtful, certainty is absent. This is how this law of mind works, we can’t be both ‘Certain’ and ‘Doubtful’ about something at the same time. Whichever thought has the strongest emotion associated with it is the one activated and repeated automatically.
When a person is having a pleasurable emotional experience and danger is imminent, the stronger emotion of danger displaces the pleasurable one. Stronger emotions tend to replace weaker ones. Therefore attaching a strong emotion to a suggestion tends to make the suggestion more effective which is why professional hypnotism is effective.
Here is an example of how an emotion can be displaced:
A child slams a door on his finger and his mother says, “I’ll just kiss it and the pain will go away.” Here the mere touch of a mother’s lips becomes the more dominant suggestion and makes the finger feel better. In that example the emotion of love pushed away pain and suffering.
But it can also work in a covert way.
Unfortunately, fear is a motivator for a lot of change.
The news media, radio, TV, cable, magazines, newspapers, social media personalities, You Tube Channels and others create an endless emotion of fear.
Once in that fear state there is a population of people who go into hypnosis and believe wholeheartedly what the program is suggesting. In order to keep them in a trance, more fear is created. It seems we are afraid of everything…too much rain, not enough rain, gas-powered cars, bugs, weeds, the list is endless. We are programmed to fear these things so we can buy into the solution to them, I understand this based on my advertising background.
One need not come to a hypnotist office to be hypnotized. There is a large number of hypnotized subjects all around you. To find out, ask them why they believe they way they do about something…if they can’t tell you they are just following the hypnotic instructions.
People who have used their critical thinking skills to decide what they will believe or not can always give you a reason for the way they feel…not just, “because that is the way it is.” Or, “we have to do it that way.”

About Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a form of cooperative therapy that targets specific problems and attitudes. Hypnosis is based on the idea that each client is willing to work toward a goal with a qualified specialist, and break out of bad patterns. If certain behaviors are threatening personal relationships, physical and emotional health, or success at work, it could be helpful to examine the root of these problems in a controlled environment with a certified hypnotist. Hypnosis provides clarity to clients who may not understand their inability to change or improve chronic situations in their lives.
