What Is Hypnosis? Really.
I’m Roger Simpson, the Seasoned Citizen Hypnotist at The Flow Center for Hypnosis in Dallas, Texas.
Hypnosis is just a word, a label, for a one of the many states of mind that the Human Mind goes through all the time. It could be called Guided Meditation. It has been called Mesmerism, it was called Magnetism.
I like to refer to it as the Alpha State, after the name of the brainwave pattern you see from an EEG machine. Hypnosis also includes a deeper hypnotic state which is the Theta Brainwave State. It’s just based on the speed of the waves. You can read up on brainwaves online through a search engine.
Point is, our normal waking brainwave state is the Beta state, just to put a label on it. When you’re at peak excitement, like bungie-jumping, that’s the Gamma State; your brainwaves are going real fast then.
When you’re in dreamless sleep, totally unconscious; that’s Delta.
Hypnosis is simply experiencing the Alpha and Theta state, on purpose, while you are still awake.
You see, every night when you’re going to sleep, and every morning when you’re waking up, your mind passes through the brainwave speeds of Alpha on the way. It’s the brainwave state or speed of hypnosis. You usually keep going through Theta into Delta Sleep and then cycle up to Theta, or the dream-state throughout the night.
Studies show that most people actually wake up into Beta, the fully conscious state, about half a dozen to a dozen times a night, but always forget that they did. Unless, of course, if you’re a Senior, more specifically a man, in which case, you might often not only wake up that many times, but you actually get up and walk down the hall and back. Probably the most exercise you get.
